Observations from watching Mississippi State practice

Deep in the heart of the campus of Mississippi State, the Bulldogs Football program has started Fall Camp in preparation for the 2023 season. A new era of Mississippi State Football has taken the program with excitement as Head Coach Zach Arnett and his coaching staff prepare the program for another chapter in the Mississippi State Football book. Over the weekend, local media members had the distinct opportunity to watch the Bulldogs practice during the first few days of Fall Camp. Observations from practice are hard to make due to the nature of Fall Camp, but a few things made their way to the top of the list in terms of jumping off the page.

First, Mississippi State fans will notice the size improvements made to Quarterback Will Rogers. Rogers comes into the 2023 season with an unbelievable amount of expectations after he torched the record books in 2022. Rogers spent the off-season getting bigger and faster in preparations for the 2023 season. Rogers bulked up in size, giving him an advantage in throwing mechanics and pure athleticism. Also, it appears that Will Rogers has adopted the new offensive schemes without a problem.

Second, the backup Quarterback, Mike White, is a legitimate weapon for Mississippi State to utilize during the 2023 season. White, the transfer from Vanderbilt, brought talent and excitement to the Bulldogs’ Quarterback room. Mississippi State would rotate the second team with the first team on Saturday; during that period, White completed a long touchdown pass to spark the offensive unit. Rogers will be the starter, but White gives Mississippi State another option off the bench in need of a spark.

Third, with the Air Raid out, Mississippi State will utilize the tight end position more than in years past. Under Offensive Coordinator Kevin Barbay; has brought a new scheme to the Mississippi State program. Under that new offensive scheme comes the powerful usage of the Tight End. Mississippi State will roll out the Tight End to confuse opponents to not knowing what to expect from the Bulldogs.

Lastly, as expected Linebackers, Jett Johnson and Nathaniel Watson have emerged as the leaders of the Mississippi State defensive unit. Johnson and Watson had remarkable seasons in 2022, creating the buildup for the 2023 season. As Fall Camp progresses, Mississippi State will continue building around these two. Defensively, Mississippi State will be physical in the 2023 season.

Mississippi State will open its season on September 2nd at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi, against Southeast Louisiana.
