Observations and takeaways from the season opener for Mississippi State Football

It was the perfect Saturday for Head Coach Zach Arnett and his Mississippi State Bulldogs as they opened the 2023 season at Davis Wade Stadium against the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana. Despite a slow start for Mississippi State, the Bulldogs dominated the second half, leaving the coaching staff with things to improve upon as the Bulldogs turn the page to the Arizona game on Saturday. In terms of first games, overreactions, and takeaways might seem a bit far-fetched for some, but you can learn more about a team from watching the team play another opponent, even if that opponent is from the FCS level of college football.

First, in observation, Mississippi State fans are excited about the future of Bulldogs Football under the leadership of Zach Arnett. Walking around the Jucton before the game, it was evident that Mississippi State fans were eager to see the product on the field. Fans were mingling and having a great time preparing for the game against Southeastern Louisiana. As kick-off approached at Davis Wade Stadium, the echos of cowbells clad in maroon and white made their way around the stadium. As the blowout progressed, Mississippi State fans stayed around and continued to cheer on the Bulldogs to a 48-7 victory over the Lions to start the 2023 season on a positive note.

Second, on the offensive side of the ball, Mississippi State will be a lot more balanced during the 2023 season. Mississippi State finished the win with 525 yards of total offense. On the ground, Mississippi State saw seven guys rushing for 298 yards, including two massive runs from backup QB Mike Wright and freshman wide receiver Creed Whittemore. Through the air, Will Rogers connected with eight Mississippi State receivers. Rogers finished the day with two touchdowns. Mississippi State fans also saw the Bulldogs play with the concept of Mike Wright adding an extra layer of difficulty for defenders to cover.

Third, on the defensive side of the ball, Mississippi State dominated in all aspects of the meaning on Saturday against the Lions. Mississippi State allowed 208 yards of total Southeastern Louisiana offensive production. Holding the Lions to less than 100 yards on the ground, Mississippi State gave up one touchdown in the second quarter. On top of that, Mississippi State forced a blocked punt that got returned for a touchdown, sparking an onslaught of scoring from the Bulldogs on the offensive side of the ball.

Overall, Saturday was a good day for the Mississippi State Bulldogs as they cruised to a 48-7 victory to open the season with a bang. A lot to prove, but Mississippi State has another opportunity to get better this week as they prepare to host the Wildcats of Arizona on Saturday night at Davis Wade Stadium.
