LSU dominates Mississippi State 41-14 to open Southeastern Conference play

Cowbells were silenced on Saturday morning at Davis Wade Stadium as the LSU Tigers dominated the hometown Mississippi State Bulldogs. Saturday’s crowd was electric before the kick, with the Bulldog faithful creating the Davis Wade Stadium experience. However, despite electing to receive the ball first, Mississippi State failed to have an offensive flow early, leaving the Tigers opportunities to secure the momentum early. LSU capitalized, silencing the cowbells and dominating the 2023 Southeastern Conference opener.

LSU would jump out on Mississippi State early by scoring 24 unanswered points, holding Mississippi State to 79 first-half yards. Mississippi State would break the scoring drought with 50 seconds remaining in the first half with an impressive touchdown drive to make it 24-7 at the break.

Midway through the first half, students started to chat ” We Want Mike” in support of backup quarterback Mike Wright after Will Rogers struggled to lead the Bulldogs effectively on Saturday.

LSU would add a field goal to start the second half, making it 27-7 Tigers. On the ensuing possession, once again stalled out a promising drive after questionable play calling would keep the Bulldogs out of the endzone with 5:50 in the third. On that possession, Mississippi State would attempt to go for it on 4th down, with the call being a designed handoff from Mike Wright stopped due to a delay of game penalty before bringing Will Rogers back in to overthrow a Mississippi State receiver to fail on the 4th down attempt. LSU would score a touchdown on the following possession, breaking the levee to make it 34-7 Tigers with 3:27 in the 3rd. LSU would put together an impressive drive with 12:11 remaining in the game, ending with another LSU Touchdown to make it 41-7 Tigers. Mike Wright would be brought in during garbage time to score a touchdown for Mississippi State to make it 41-14.

Overall, Saturday was an utter disaster for Mississippi State as they failed to carry the momentum brought by the Bulldog faithful on Saturday morning. All the pieces were there for a unique Saturday afternoon at Davis Wade Stadium, yet Mississippi State failed to deliver the Bulldogs drop their first game of the season. Mississippi State will return to action next Saturday as the Bulldogs travel to Willaims Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina, to take on Coach Beamer and the Gamecocks of South Carolina.
