Mississippi State returns home to take on Southern Miss

Two games remain in the 2023 Mississippi State Football season, with Southern Miss coming to Davis Wade Stadium to take on the Bulldogs on Saturday morning. A lot has changed within the Mississippi State Football program since the Bulldogs took the field against Texas A&M last Saturday. Mississippi State came into the Southern Miss game week without Former Head Coach Zach Arnett, as Coach Arnett was relieved of his duties as Head Coach of the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Monday morning. Mississippi State named a familiar face to act as the Head Coach for the Bulldogs; Greg Knox will lead the Bulldogs out on the field on Saturday. Knox once served as the interim Head Coach for Mississippi State in 2017 when Dan Mullen left Starkville to take the Florida job; Knox won the Taxslayer Bowl over Louisville.

With two games remaining against in-state foes, Mississippi State must win both to stay in contention for another postseason trip for the Bulldogs.

Without a Head Coach, the identity of Mississippi State remains a mystery as the Bulldogs prepare for an all-out war against the Golden Eagles on Saturday. Sometimes, when a Coach doesn’t make it through the season, one of two things happens to a program.

First, sometimes, a program will rally together to finish the season with positive energy to build off of for the next season.

Second, a team without a Head Coach will come out flat and lose against sub-par opponents, and the program gets all the life from the new coach coming in.

How will Mississippi State finish? Nobody knows, but the guys on social media seem to be rallying behind one another for the betterment of the program. For many of the guys on the Mississippi State roster, these last two home games at Davis Wade Stadium are their last chance to play in front of the Bulldog faithful with cowbells cheering them on to cross the finish line of success.

There seems to be some positive mojo in getting Will Rogers and Woody Marks back and healthy against Southern Miss on Saturday morning at Davis Wade Stadium. Both guys missed extended time this season with various injuries but have been upgraded to game-time decisions on Saturday morning. If healthy, Mississippi State will have a nearly full-strength offensive unit to roll out on Saturday morning. Without them, Mississippi State will likely see Chris Parsons start at quarterback while Mike Wright comes in during crucial possessions for the Bulldogs.

On the defensive side of the ball, Mississippi State will have a host of Bulldogs chomping at the bits to cause havoc in the Southern Miss backfield.

Overall, Mississippi State should win with ease on Saturday morning, but anything can happen in a rivalry game between a G5 and a Southeastern Conference opponent. Mississippi State and Southern Miss last met in 2019; the Bulldogs came out on top 38-15 in front of a packed out Davis Wade Stadium.

Mississippi State and Southern Miss will have the early kick on Saturday morning with an audience on SEC Network Plus.
