Keeping it weird: Kentucky Baseball is now one win away from the College World Series for the first time in program history

With a record-setting crowd at Kentucky Proud Park in Lexington, Kentucky, the atmosphere was electric. The Wildcats, fueled by the energy of their passionate fans, took the field in game one of the Super Regional against Oregon State. The fans, lining the sidewalks leading to the gates of Kentucky Proud Park, created an environment that was a testament to the Wildcats’ strong fan base and set the tone for the game.

Kentucky kept things weird on Saturday night. The Wildcats jumped on the Beavers early and never looked back. Kentucky held Oregon State scoreless for the first time this season. Oregon State had no answer for the onslaught of Kentucky’s offensive firepower, combined with a legendary pitching performance from Trey Pooser and Jackson Nove.

Pooser and Nove combined for a one-hit shutout of the Beaver of Oregon State. Trey Pooser gave Kentucky seven innings, giving up one hit on zero runs. It was just an unreal outing for Pooser that gave the Kentucky bullpen a needed day of rest to prepare for Sunday’s game two. Jackson Nove came in the top of the 8th inning with the Wildcats needing six outs for the victory over Oregon State. Nove retired six straight batters on Saturday night, propelling Kentucky to a 10-0 win over Oregon State.

On the offensive side, it wasn’t sexy, but it got the job done for the Wildcats. A three-run shot from Ryan Nicholson opened the floodgates for Kentucky with a seven-run 7th inning, pushing the lead to 10-0 over the Beavers. Other than that, it was a traditional Kentucky Baseball offensive game with timely hitting, giving the Wildcats endless scoring chances on Saturday night.

Dating back to the preseason, Kentucky has used the word ” Weird” to describe the 2024 Kentucky Baseball team. They’re not flashy, and they don’t play sexy baseball; they play what works for them. Living by that mantra, when they take the field on Sunday, expect Kentucky Baseball to do what they do, controlling the emotions as they go for the Super Regional sweep of Oregon State on Sunday night.

Kentucky and Oregon State will play the late game on Sunday night. The Wildcats’ spot in the College World Series is on the line. Sunday night will be, without question, the biggest night in Kentucky Baseball’s history. A win over Oregon State would send Kentucky to Omaha for the first time in school, capping off the vision of former Kentucky Head Coach Keith Madison and the brickwork laid by the current coaching staff. Kentucky has never been in this position before; they’ve made the Super Regional but have never been one win away from Omaha.

Kentucky fans, enjoy the moment; the first time only happens once.
