Sustained success: Taking a look at what separates Coach Mulkey from the rest of the pack

As the final seconds ticked off the clock in Gainesville, Florida, Coach Mulkey and her LSU Tigers were on the verge of improving to 20-0 for the second time in program history. The realization of sustained success under Coach Mulkey’s leadership is unparalleled. A national championship for LSU, and now one of the best teams in college basketball, not to mention dating back to her first year as a head coach, Coach Mulkey has finished with at least twenty wins in every one of her 25 seasons as a Head Coach.

Nobody does it better than her. She’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but Coach Mulkey is one of the greatest coaches to ever grace the sidelines.

A down year for a Coach Mulkey-coached team is an elite eight-appearance or a loss in the SEC Championship game; that level of sustained success is hard to come by in today’s era of college athletics. Her players all love her, and the fans love her. They even offer Coach Mulkey lookalike days at the PMAC, encouraging fans to wear their best-bedazzled sequin attire to honor Coach Mulkey’s swagger.

In her first three seasons, Coach Mulkey led LSU to a second-round exit, a National Championship, and an appearance in the Elite Eight. Adding her 4th season, Coach Mulkey has put together a 111-14 record to go with the postseason success. There are a lot of programs in college basketball that would give anything to be in the position to have the sustained success that LSU has been privileged to under the leadership of Coach Mulkey. At Baylor, Coach Mulkey delivered the school with three National Championships, only missing the NCAA Tournament once in her career. Two schools in 25 years as a Head Coach is just as impressive as any of her success.

As the rest of the LSU season progresses, the uptick in haters will showcase their lack of basketball knowledge, with takes just because Coach Mulkey is brash. What those people fail to realize is that Coach Mulkey is fierce, but that’s what happens when you’re one of the greatest college basketball coaches to ever grace the sidelines. She’s a fierce competitor with a deep love for others and the game of basketball.

Who knows where LSU’s season will end, but watching this year’s LSU team, there’s no doubt that this might be the most complete team Coach Mulkey has ever had in her time in Baton Rouge. They have talent up and down the roster, but what separates them from the rest is that they refuse to lose the attitude that makes winning a National Championship much more of a reality.

LSU will return to action on Thursday night when it travels to South Carolina to take on Coach Dawn Stanley and the South Carolina Gamecocks in one of the most anticipated basketball games of the season.
