Wichita State shocks #14 Memphis 84-79 in overtime, ending the eight game winning streak for the Tigers

Another day in the life of the American Athletic Conference, the Memphis Tigers would travel into Wichita, Kansas, to take on the Wichita State Shockers.

As usual, when Memphis comes to town, the Charles Koch Arena saw an early arrival crowd, filling the arena with folks wearing black and gold supporting the Shockers. The student section has t-shirts, and the environment of a big college basketball game is on tap for Coach Penny Hardaway and his Memphis Tigers as they look to extend their winning streak to nine games. A streak dates back to January 19th, when the Tigers put together a get-right game against Charlotte following the loss to Temple a few days prior.

As expected, Witchta State put together an impressive first half of basketball, finishing the half with a 32-28 lead over the Tigers.

Coach Hardaway made usual halftime adjustments as the curtain gave way to the second half, and the Tigers gained some ground on the Shockers, taking a 41-40 lead at the under-16 media timeout. Back-to-back threes from PJ Carter would extend the Tiger’s lead to eight, 53-45, at the under-12 media timeout. With 8:31 on the clock, the Shockers had cut into the Memphis lead, tying the game at 53. Memphis would respond with a timeout with a layup from PJ Haggerty to make it 55-53 Memphis at the under-8 media timeout. The game’s final media timeout saw the Tigers holding a 63-61 lead over the Shockers. The regulation was not enough time for the Tigers and Shockers as they needed overtime to decide a winner.

Overtime was all Wichita State as the Shockers shocked the Tigers and ended the eight-game winning streak.
