Memphis wins the AAC Tournament, earning a five seed in the NCAA Tournament

Round three.

Memphis and the UAB Blazers would meet for the third time this season in the AAC Tournament Championship game at Dickies Arena in Ft. Worth, Texas. Not only would a championship be on the line, but bragging rights for an entire year as the Tigers looking to complete a three-game sweep of the Blazers, while UAB was battling to keep the season alive for at least one more week. Sunday was about finishing the job for the Tigers and adding more to the trophy case this season. For UAB, the Blazers needed a win to reach the NCAA Tournament, plus they wanted to salvage the season series with the Tigers after being dominated by Memphis in both prior meetings.

In what started as one of the ugliest starts of the season, Memphis and UAB played a separate game of who could turn over the ball the most in the first half. The Tigers came out on top of that with eight first-half turnovers, while UAB had seven.

Despite eight points from Dain Dainja, the Tigers fell behind at the half, with the Blazers holding a slim 35-32 lead over Memphis.

Memphis opened the second half with a good bit of fire under their butts as the Tigers raced out to a 45-41 at the under-16 media timeout of the second half before seeing the lead drop to 51-48 at the under-12. At the under-8 media timeout, the Memphis Tigers lead sat at 63-58. With 4:14 on the clock and an injury timeout for UAB, the Tigers led the Blazers 73-64. The Tigers held a 79-66 lead over UAB at the final media timeout.

With Tyrese Hunter out for the Tigers on Sunday, it was the Dain Dainja and PJ Haggerty show as they clinched their second AAC Tournament Championship in three years. The two combined for 45 points, with Haggerty leading the way with 23 points.

Memphis will head to Seattle, Washington, as the fifth seed in the West Regional, and they will take on the Colorado State Rams on Friday.
