Mississippi State takes game one of the series 25-7 over Missouri

On a short week due to the final weekend of conference play before the postseason begins next week in Hoover, the Mississippi State Bulldogs would travel north to take on the Missouri Tigers in a three-game set before heading back south to the Hoover Met for the SEC Tournament.

Fresh off a series win over Ole Miss and a sweep of Kentucky, the Bulldogs of Mississippi State came into the series with Missouri looking to keep the momentum flowing with a dominating game one victory over the Tigers. For Missouri, a season that should be all but forgotten came into the series with the Bulldogs fresh off a massive confidence-boosting road series sweep of the preseason number one, Texas A&M, for the first Southeastern Conference wins of the season for the Tigers program.

Needing a few wins in Columbia to boost their SEC seed line, the Mississippi State Bulldogs wasted no time on Thursday night, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead in the top half of the first inning to set the tone early with the overpowering Pico Kohn on the mound to protect the early lead. From there, the beatdown was on; Mississippi State added four runs in the 4th and four in the 6th to make it 12-0 Bulldogs through six innings of play. Missouri would add seven combined runs in the 6th and 7th to extend the game to a full nine innings. Mississippi State would plate three runs in the top half of the 8th inning to extend the lead to 15-7 over Missouri. From there, the bats would awaken once more in the 9th inning, capped off by a two-run shot from Hunter Hines to bring his career record to 67 home runs, tying the most in Mississippi State history. That 9th inning saw the Bulldogs plate ten more insurance runs to make it 25-7. Ace Reese and Reed Stallman finished their nights with two home runs each, while Joe Powell, Noah Sullivan, Hunter Hines, and Sawyer Reeves finished each with one home run.

Pico Kohn finished his night after 4.1 innings, giving up just two hits and zero runs, with seven strikeouts. Coach Justin Parker then went to the bullpen to give Kohn a nice rest before Hoover. The bullpen would give Missouri seven runs to extend the game to a full nine innings on Thursday night.

Mississippi State will look to take the series on Friday night. The Bulldogs will have Evan Siary on the mound. The first pitch between the Bulldogs and Tigers will be 6:00 on the SEC Network Plus.
