Despite the undeserved outside noise of the last few weeks, the Ole Miss Rebels have a lot to celebrate: an 11-1 record, 7-1 in conference, wins in the Egg Bowl and Magnolia Bowls, two Heisman hopefuls, and the revival of Ole Miss Football. No matter what happens in the College Football Playoff this season, Ole Miss has, without question, had the greatest season in the program’s history. For those who have been around it, the impact these guys have had on Ole Miss this season is something that will be talked about for generations to come. Now with Coach Pete Golding at the helm, leading the charge into the College Football Playoff, Ole Miss can get back to playing Ole Miss football the way Coach Vaught and Archie Manning meant for it to be played.
So, let’s talk about it. What makes the 2025 Ole Miss football season the best in school history?
First, let me say this: there is no one person bigger than the Ole Miss brand. Ole Miss football has always been more than the wins, the money, or the flash. The wins this season just added to the aura of the program, giving a deserving fan base something to be excited about as they face the reality of a chance to win a national championship.
Starting with the rivarlies, at Ole Miss, the true measure of a successful season has always been traced back each season to the success or lack of success in the two major rivarlies in the Magnolia Bowl against LSU, and the Egg Bowl against Mississippi State. Ole Miss dominated both and delivered hardware to the trophy case for another year to add to the recruiting pitch for Coach Golding and his staff. Easier to recruit top-level talent from the region when you dominate those rivalry games, and Ole Miss did, with the distraction in the Egg Bowl of an impending coach departure.

Another takeaway from the season is the team’s embrace of Ole Miss. Even with all the distractions from the former coach, the guys on the Rebels roster embraced the fan base and the state of Mississippi. You see, what one might not understand about Mississippi in general, if you love Mississippi, then Mississippi will love you back. The 2025 Ole Miss Rebels have embraced the fan base, feeding off the energy and channeling everything that makes Ole Miss a special place to play. With that mutual love between the team and the fan base will come a College Football Playoff environment at Vaught Hemingway Stadium, never before, and all that is credit to how the team itself has meshed with all of Rebels Nation, it’s just been a match made in heaven. Ole Miss has had teams in the past embrace the culture, but none have solely relied on the Ole Miss community for the extra boost they needed to take things to the next level.
Lastly, it’s been fun to watch how each guy on the roster takes the literal meaning of brother’s keeper to the max. From the quarterback change to leaning on each other through adversity, the Rebels have shown college football the true meaning of playing for the front of the jersey while picking up the slack. In the history of the program, one would be hard-pressed to find a more selfless group of players than what Ole Miss has this season. They deserve the spotlight, and quite frankly, with the actions of the last few weeks, it’s time for the guys on the roster to get their roses while enjoying whatever Sunday brings to them.
However, this thing ends for Ole Miss. The 2025 Ole Miss football team will go down in the history books as the team that forever changed the perception of Rebels football for generations to come. This is the team that could jumpstart something similar to what Clemson had in the early days of the College Football Playoffs, where they rattled off a few championships. Trusting the process and taking in all the hype will be the name of the game as the College Football Playoff announcement turns into a legitimate National Championship run for the Rebels. For all of Rebel Nation, just sit back, enjoy the ride, and trust the process, as this College Football Playoff has the potential to unlock a much higher potential for the program.
Ole Miss will find out their College Football Playoff opponent on Sunday.
