Fresh off a massive road win at Texas on Saturday night, Coach Jans and the Mississippi State would welcome the Sooners of Oklahoma to the Hump on Wednesday night for another early Southeastern Conference test. Not only did Mississippi State beat Texas on Wednesday night they extended the winning streak to five games and with the Sooners coming to town the Bulldogs would look to extend that streak to six games while improving to 2-0 in SEC play, while shifting the narrative around the team to bring back some excitment heading into the massive road test at Kentucky on Saturday night.
Saturday night was once again the Josh Hubbard show as he finished with 38 points, while Jayden Epps was a big contributor with 27 points of his own to help the Bulldogs escape with a 101-98 win over the Longhorns.
For the Sooners of Oklahoma, Wednesday night would also provide them with an opportunity to open SEC play 2-0 after they dominated Ole Miss on Saturday night at home, 86-70, and a chance to extend their winning streak to six games as well.
As we’ve seen through two games, life in the Southeastern Conference basketball land is a gauntlet, and every night is an uphill climb, and Wednesday night would likely be the same story for both Mississippi State and Oklahoma.

Oklahoma would open the game with an early 5-4 lead at the under-16 first-half media timeout. Mississippi State responded by taking an 11-8 lead over the Sooners at the under-12 first-half media timeout. With 9:15 on the first-half game clock, the Bulldogs would force a Sooners timeout after extending the lead to 15-8. Oklahoma would respond by cutting the Mississippi State lead to 17-15 at the under-8 media timeout of the first half. Mississippi State would hold on to a 23-16 lead at the final media timeout of the half. A late run by the Sooners would force the Bulldogs to call a timeout with 1:05 on the clock as Oklahoma took a 27-25 lead over Mississippi State. Mississippi State would tie at 27, sending the game to halftime gridlocked at 27.
As expected, Josh Hubbard led both teams in scoring at the half with 14 points.
The second half would be as much of a dog fight as the first half, as Mississippi State and Oklahoma battled for a hard-fought Wednesday night SEC victory.
Oklahoma would hold a slight 37-35 lead over Mississippi State at the under-16 media timeout with 15:57 remaining in the game. At the under-12 media timeout, it was the Mississippi State Bulldogs holding on to a 43-38 lead over the Sooners with 11:30 to play. Mississippi State extended the lead to 53-45 at the under-8 media timeout of the second half with 7:14 remaining in the game. As the final media rolled, it became evident that Mississippi State was on the verge of a sweet victory as they led the Sooners 65-49 with 4:04 remaining in the game.
Josh Hubbard led the way in scoring with 30 points for Mississippi State in the 72-53 victory over the Sooners on Wednesday night.
As the second half rolled on, a lethal combination of Josh Hubbard doing Josh Hubbard things and the painstaking defense that causes all hell for their opponents. Mississippi State earned a massive 72-53 win over Oklahoma to improve to 2-0 in SEC play.
Mississippi State will hit the road on Saturday night as they face a 0-2 Kentucky team desperate for a conference win, as they allowed Missouri to come into Lexington and earned a 73-68 win over the Wildcats.
