#4 Mississippi State run rules Alcorn State 19-0 improving to 5-0 on the season

An overcast afternoon brought Mississippi State its second midweek test of the season as they welcome Alcorn State to Dudy Noble Field for a Wednesday afternoon showdown. Mississippi State came into the matchup with Alcorn State looking to carry the mometum from the 4-0 start on the season into another challenge.

Although not mighty, Alcorn State is a baseball program that can catch you napping if you’re not locked in and focused on the task at hand. Often, fans will complain about Mississippi State having to play them, but on the contrary, it teaches a young team like Mississippi State to stay displined agaisnt bad teams to avoid disastrous losses that would derail an RPI before the meat of the season even begins. It’s one of the midweeks that you might not like playing, but it’s needed in the grand scheme of things for a roster to come together and coaches to figure out which lineups work the best in every situation and matchup.

Starting for Mississippi State at pitcher tonight was Tyler Pitzer. Pitzer gave the Bulldogs two complete innings, giving up a single hit while striking out three Alcorn State batters.

As expected, Mississippi State jumped out on Alcorn State early, building a 9-0 lead through two complete innings of play on Wednesday night. During that nine-run start, Mississippi State saw Blake Bevins with a three-run home run, then added to the lead with timely hitting that extended the lead to a manageable margin through two innings. Mississippi State would add to the lead over Alcorn, making it 13-0 Bulldogs through three complete innings. Through three innings with 13 runs, Mississippi State had forced Alcorn State to use four arms in hopes of slowing down the onslaught of Mississippi State bats. Mississippi State would add another run in the bottom half of the 5th to extend the lead to 14-0 over Alcorn State. Mississippi State would add five more runs to the lead to make it 19-0 before ending things in the top half of the 7th with a run-rule of Alcorn State.

It might not have been the most entertaining game to date for Mississippi State fans, but valuable lessons were learned on Wednesday night as the Bulldogs cruised to an easy mid-week win over Alcorn State to improve to 5-0 on the season. Guys got qulaity in game at-bats, midweek pitchers got playing time, and all while earning game experience before matchups with Southern Miss, Tulane, Ole Miss, and even Memphis in the midweeks to come.

Mississippi State will remain at home this weekend as it welcomes Delaware to Dudy Noble for a three-game series that gets underway on Friday afternoon.
