After nearly a month of pure mayhem, all across the country, college baseball teams face the reality of conference play. For some, the gauntlet of Southeastern Conference play often makes or breaks teams. This weekend, we have a lineup of matchups that even novice baseball fans are excited about. We have everything from a potential College World Series preview between Arkansas and Mississippi State to the something-has-to-give series as LSU travels to Vanderbilt to take on the Commodores. Not to mention, we have a lot of question marks after an insane first month of college baseball, a month in which the mayhem of college baseball reared its ugly head across the Southeastern Conference with upsets, and even surprise teams like Missouri going on runs heading into conference play this weekend.
So, let’s dive right in with quick previews of the top matchups of the weekend across the Southeastern Conference.

Starting with the biggest matchup of the weekend, as third-ranked Mississippi State travels to 5th ranked Arkansas to take on the Razorbacks in what many consider to be one of the biggest conference openers in the last several years. What you have are two teams that are not only among the two of the best in the country, but this could very well be a preview of what’s to come in Omaha. There are a few more questions about the Arkansas offense, but overall, these two teams are elite, and this weekend could be a preview of postseason implications. With that said, a series win for Mississippi State would give the Bulldogs the grounds to stand on as the traditional power that Mississippi State baseball has always been. Outside of LSU, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better overall program than Mississippi State, and a win over Arkansas this weekend would give the Bulldogs a boost of mometum heading into a challenging but manageable SEC slate. As far as the matchup goes, Arkansas has the potential to hang with Mississippi State with the starting pitchers in Gabe Gaeckle, Hunter Dietz, and Colin Fisher limiting scoring opportunities for the Bulldogs, but the biggest question is, can the bats of Arkansas provide run support for the Razorbacks pitching staff? On paper, Mississippi State is deeper and has proven throughout the first month that it can provide run support for the Bulldogs’ pitching staff; for that reason, expectations are that the Bulldogs go into Arkansas and take at least two out of three from the Razorbacks.

Second, you have an interesting matchup between Ole Miss and the second-ranked Texas Longhorns in Austin this weekend. Texas opens Southeastern Conference play with a perfect 16-0 record. Although the quality of opponents might not have been all that great, Texas has taken care of business, and until proven otherwise, they’re the best team in the SEC heading into conference play. For Ole Miss, this weekend is an opportunity to showcase the offense, while the pitching staff faces its toughest challenge of the season. Texas has a potent offense that can rattle starters early, but the Ole Miss bats have proven they can get hot and remain hot, creating this insane weekend battle between the Longhorns. One thing in particular that sticks out the most for Ole Miss will be Hunter Elliott. Elliott hasn’t been awful, but he hasn’t been great either. Hudson Calhoun has had to come in and settle things down for a time or two, but there’s also that Ole Miss offense with Judd Utermark, Will Furniss, Dom Decker, and Daniel Pacella, to name a few. Expectations for this series are that the series goes all three games before deciding a winner, with the Longhorns likely taking game three on Sunday.

Then, on the West End of Nashville, you have the Something’s gotta give series between the LSU Tigers and Vanderbilt. LSU has struggled this season with its identity, while Vanderbilt has not lived up to the Vandy Boys standard. A combined 13 losses between the two programs have Tiger and Commodore fans searching for answers as they face off this weekend. Friday night, you have two hungry starters facing off in a massive game one opener. It’ll be Casan Evans for LSU and Connor Fennell. Both games have struggled this season, with earned runs between the two, but have managed to go a combined 3-0 on the season. This is another series in the series where it’s likely to go all three games this weekend, as something has to give for both the Tigers and the Commodores. Also, one of those series where picking an outright winner is difficult because the talent on the rosters has not yet produced on the field. With that said, Vanderbilt takes game three and the series over the Tigers.

An underrated series of the weekend is the Missouri Tigers hosting the 6th-ranked Auburn Tigers in Columbia. Missouri comes into the series with Auburn having won 13 straight games since February 20th. Given the level of competition hasn’t been great with wins over New Haven, Arkansas Pine Bluff, North Dakota State, and UIC, but the Tigers come into the weekend with a taste of winning, and that’s something that Missouri baseball hasn’t had in quite some time. Auburn is a College World Series-contending team, and a Missouri series win would be a massive statement for Coach Johnson and the Missouri Tigers.

In an underrated series of the weekend, you have Alabama heading to Kentucky Proud Park to take on the 21st-ranked Kentucky Wildcats. Despite a combined five losses between the two, this Kentucky-Alabama series is flying under the radar this weekend as neither team is getting the national love they deserve. Friday night’s series opener will see Tyler Fay from Alabama facing off against Jaxson Jelkin of Kentucky in an epic Friday night duel between two consistent pitchers. Both Fay and Jelkin have 26 strikeouts and 21 innings pitched; the only difference is that Jelkin has a better ERA of 2.53. Taking Kentucky to win two of the three feels like the safe pick this weekend, but Alabama is worthy of the praise; this series has all the makings of going all three.

Not mentioned in detail are two more ranked weekend series, as 19th-ranked Tennessee heads south to Foley Field to take on 8th-ranked Georgia. 22nd-ranked Texas A&M heads to 9th-ranked Oklahoma as well. Both series have early postseason implications, with the hometown teams looking to earn respect by defending home turf and winning hard-fought series.
Then you have 23rd-ranked Florida welcoming South Carolina to Gainesville for what will likely be the only sweep of the weekend in the Southeastern Conference.
No matter where you look this weekend, there’s elite baseball being played all across the Southeastern Conference. All but one series will likely be competitive, creating a memorable start to the Southeastern Conference slate, as the road to Hoover begins all across the southeast.
