This past weekend of college baseball had a little more excitement as many around the country opened the conference portion of the season, and, as expected, the drama followed. With upsets and statement wins, the opening weekend of conference play delivered an insane weekend of college baseball. From Arkansas State taking down Southern Miss in the Sun Belt, to Arkansas and Texas earning series wins over the two Mississippi schools, and even in the ACC with Georgia Tech dominating Clemson, this weekend delivered a lot of takeaways that will leave college baseball fans with a lot to ponder until Thursday rolls around.
As we do every week, let’s jump right into the thick of things with a few thoughts and observations from the weekend around the country.
Starting with the action in Music City, the ‘something has to give’ series delivered Vanderbilt a massive series win over the LSU Tigers. Coming into the weekend series, there were a lot of questions surrounding the Tigers and Commodores, and both needed the series win this weekend in the worst ways possible, at the very least to calm both fan bases down a notch or two after struggling on the non-conference slate. However, it was Coach Corbin and the Vandy boys taking care of business this weekend, taking the series from LSU. On Friday and Saturday, Vanderbilt looked like the Vanderbilt of old, picking up a 13-12 win on Friday and a dominating 11-3 win on Saturday. LSU salvaged the series with a Sunday 16-9 victory, but the bats finally came alive this weekend for Vanderbilt, scoring a combined 33 runs. It’s early, but the concerns for LSU continue to mount. They have a busy week with Grambling coming to Alex Box Stadium on Tuesday, before welcoming the Sooners of Oklahoma to the Box for a massive three-game series starting on Thursday night. Vanderbilt has Indiana coming to Nashville on Tuesday night, before heading south to Dudy Noble for a three-game series with Mississippi State. A series win over the Bulldogs for Vanderbilt could completely shift the season.

Second, staying inside the Southeastern Conference. The 5th-ranked Arkansas had a massive home statement series win over third-ranked Mississippi State over the weekend. Coming into the weekend, this was one of the most anticipated early matchups of the season, and it delivered up to expectations as a bottom of the 8th inning in the third game of the series was the fatal blow for Mississippi State, as a few mistakes led to the Razorbacks taking advantage and taking the series. Something to keep in mind with this series, this will likely be the most of another meeting between these two this season, as they’ll likely play again sometime in the postseason, either in a Super Regional, the College World Series, or even in Hoover. These two are two of the three elite teams in the Southeastern Conference. As big a series win as it was for Arkansas, all was not lost for Mississippi State this weekend, as just playing in that moment was enough to signify that Bulldogs baseball was back to playing in meaningful baseball games for the first time since winning the National Championship in 2021. Don’t let that bottom of the 8th inning in game three of the series taint your viewpoint on the overall well-being of the Mississippi State program heading into another massive series against Vanderbilt this weekend. Trust the process, and understand that winning on the road in this conference is borderline impossible, but Mississippi State fought hard, and Arkansas just made a couple more plays to escape with the series.

One last thing from the Southeastern Conference before touching on the Sun Belt, and even the ACC with Georgia Tech. Only three SEC teams swept this weekend, with Kentucky, Auburn, and Florida each earning three wins, taking the tied-for-first-place position atop the standings after the first weekend of Southeastern Conference play. Out of those three, it was the Kentucky Wildcats who impressed the most with three wins over a solid Alabama team. Respectfully, Florida and Auburn earned three wins over the bottom two in the Southeastern Conference, still impressive, but it’s relative when talking about sweeps this weekend. For Kentucky, taking all three games over Alabama was exactly what the Wildcats needed to earn a bit more of the respect they deserve. Coming into the season, the conversation around Kentucky baseball quickly shifted to a team with all the pieces that could very well get Coach Mingione and the program back to the College World Series, with this time being different, with the depth on the roster being good enough to compete with the best of the best. Kentucky doesn’t do things the flashy way; it just finds ways to beat teams and earn series wins in the Southeastern Conference. Kentucky now has a massive week ahead, with a home midweek game against Marshall before heading south to take on Ole Miss starting on Thursday night.

In the Sun Belt, Coastal Carolina, Marshall, James Madison, and Louisiana Monroe swept the weekend, but it was the Arkansas State Red Wolves who made the biggest statement with a massive series win over Southern Miss. Truly an incredible series win for Arkansas State this weekend as they defended home field, and stunned the 7th ranked Golden Eagles this weekend taking two out of the three games and proving yet again the depth of the Sun Belt Conference as a whole. Sure, some of your bottom teams might not be as talented each year, but this year, the Sun Belt has never been better. You have parity across the league, with truly four to five teams that can not only compete for the Sun Belt crown but also for a run to the College World Series. Despite what some may say about the Sun Belt and the credit it earns, the conference as a whole in baseball is right there with the Big 12, above the Big 10, and just below the ACC and Southeastern Conference. It’s been this way for years. Coastal Carolina won the National Championship in 2016 and played for the Title last season. Southern Miss has had success, and so have many other programs that have competed at the highest level.

Lastly, last week we talked about Texas; the week before, it was UCLA; and this week, it’s the third-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets from the ACC. Georgia Tech entered the week facing some skepticism about the quality of opponents they had played in the first month, but the Yellow Jackets went into Clemson this weekend and dominated the Tigers, taking two out of three games, including a run-ruled Thursday night game in which the Yellow Jackets won 10-0. For what they lack in quality opponents, Georgia Tech passes the eye test. This week will be a huge test for the Yellow Jackets as they face a road game at Auburn on Tuesday, before another conference road series at Pitt starting on Friday.
As we enter another week of college baseball, here are a few midweeks to keep an eye on starting on Tuesday.
