Week seven midweek recap

We’ve reached week seven of the college baseball season, and there’s a certain feel in the air this week as many teams have either midweeks or weekends against rivals, some even have both, like Mississippi State, Auburn, and Ole Miss. This week could be a really fun one in college baseball, with subplots and drama galore. This might shape into one of the best weeks of college baseball this season.

Starting with juicy midweek matchups to jumpstart this week off with a bang. Matchups like Mississippi State and Southern Miss, Ole Miss and Memphis, Kentucky and Murray State, Auburn and South Alabama, Coastal Carolina and Clemson, and many more from around the country served as an appetizer for the weekend to come. Not to mention, you had a massive game down in the Sunshine State as the Florida Gators met the Seminoles of Florida State in Jacksonville, Florida, for a little Florida rivalry. Then, in an underrated matchup in Houston, the Cougars welcomed the 2nd-ranked Texas for an interesting matchup between two old rivals.

Let’s start things off in the Sunshine State, as 10th-ranked Florida State would meet the Florida Gators in game two of the midweek season series. Florida would jump on Florida State early in the bottom half of the second inning, taking an early 1-0 lead over the Seminoles. From there, Florida would add four more insurance runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to extend the lead over Florida State to 5-0 heading to the 8th inning. Florida finished off the Seminoles for another series, for the eighth time out of the last nine seasons. Truly an incredible series for the Gators as they now shift the focus to a series at Arkansas starting on Friday night.

In an earlier afternoon game at Foley Field in Athens, Georgia, the Kennesaw State Owls went into Athens and shocked 4th-ranked Georgia 10-7. Despite a valiant effort at the end, the Kennesaw State lead was too much for Georgia to overcome as Kennesaw State picked up the highest-ranked win in program history. For Georgia, the midweek woes continue; the Bulldogs will now welcome a struggling South Carolina team to Athens for three games starting on Friday night.

In the Magnolia State, it was all Mississippi State as they welcomed Southern Miss to Dudy Noble Field in what felt like a revenge game for the Bulldogs. Mississippi State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning, before adding one in the second, then five in the bottom of the third to extend the lead over the Golden Eagles to 9-0. Mississippi State would add another run in the bottom of the 4th to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to 10-0, bringing the reality of another run-ruled game into play. Behind timely hitting, Mississippi State had two guys with home runs on Tuesday night, with Aidan Teel and Jacob Parker being the two Mississippi State guys with home runs. Mississippi State would extend the lead to 12-0 in the bottom of the 5th inning with a two-run inning, before closing out Southern Miss in the top half of the 7th to give the Bulldogs a 12-0 victory. Mississippi State will now take a 21-4 record to Swayze Field, where they’ll face Ole Miss in a three-game series starting on Friday.

Just about three hours north, you had a massive regional rivalry going down as the 18th-ranked Ole Miss Rebels would head to FedEx Park to take on the Memphis Tigers in game two of the midweek series. Ole Miss took the first game 7-1 earlier this month at Swayze Field. Ole Miss would take the first lead in this matchup in the top half of the third with a sac fly that scored Dom Decker to give the Rebels an early 1-0 lead over the Tigers. Memphis responded with a two-run bottom of the 4th inning to take a 2-1 lead over the Rebels before a two-run shot from Cade Hitson in the bottom of the 5th to extend that Memphis lead to 4-1. Ole Miss would add a run to the scoreboard in the top half of the 7th to cut into the Memphis lead at 4-2. Memphis would add two more insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th inning, capped off by a solo shot from Michael Gupton to secure the Tigers a 6-2 victory over #18 Ole Miss. The win over 18th-ranked Ole Miss marked the first win for Memphis over a top-25 team since 2023, when the Tigers beat the Shockers of Wichita State. Truly a massive win for Coach Riser and the boys as they look to turn the season around with mometum from beating Ole Miss on Tuesday night.

Once again, midweek baseball delivered on Tuesday night, and as we turn the focus to the weekend, let’s relish in the action from Tuesday night as we prepare for another wild weekend of conference baseball.
