Tuesday night brought the excitement of a bluegrass rivalry enriched with history and bad blood as the Louisville Cardinals traveled the 67 miles to Kentucky Proud Park, where Coach Mingione and the Kentucky Wildcats were waiting for their time to pounce on the opportunity to take the first game of the midweek series between the two.
Kentucky would come into the Tuesday night matchup looking for a bounce-back after a series debacle, as the Wildcats dropped two out of three at home to a struggling Missouri Tigers team. A Missouri team with just three conference wins on the season, the Wildcats would look to put that behind them with a Tuesday victory over Louisville, before shifting the focus to a road trip to Auburn starting on Friday night.
For the Louisville Cardinals, Tuesday night was an opportunity like Kentucky for a bounce back after dropping two out of three on the road at Duke. Despite College World Series preseason aspirations, Louisville has only one series win in ACC play so far this season and would look to change the mometum on Tuesday night against Kentucky.
Despite facing one of the best offensive teams out of the ACC, the Kentucky pitching held Louisville without a hit until the top half of the 7th inning. Kentucky went through eight pitchers on Tuesday with a combined 12 strikeouts across the unit. Starter Connor Mattison delivered for Kentucky with three complete innings, striking out three while only giving up one hit. Across the eight pitchers used on Tuesday night, Kentucky allowed just two hits and two runs.

Louisville would strike first in the top half of the first inning, putting up a 1-0 lead over the Wildcats. Kentucky would respond in the 4th with a sac fly that scored a run to make it 1-1. From there, Kentucky would unlock what they do best with a small-ball approach in the bottom of the 6th inning, with timely hitting and doing the small things at the plate, extending their lead over Louisville to 4-1. Louisville would lead the bases loaded in the top half of the 7th without scoring a run, leaving the door open for Kentucky to add to the lead. Louisville would cut into the Kentucky lead with a run in the 9th, making it 4-2, but the pitching from Kentucky was too much to overcome as the Wildcats earned a massive 4-2 win over Louisville.
Any way you slice it, Tuesday night was a good win for the Wildcats as they had a get-right game, did most of the small things well, and earned a massive win over the in-state rival. Not much more you can ask for from the Wildcats on Tuesday night as they now shift the focus to a challenging road trip at Auburn for a three-game series starting on Friday night. Kentucky needs a road SEC series win in the worst way possible after dropping the series at home to Missouri, then failing to finish the job at LSU and Ole Miss. Auburn will be coming into the series licking its wounds after being humiliated at home by Jacksonville State, who came into Auburn and run-ruled the Tigers 15-4. Auburn has a 6-6 SEC record as well. A win this weekend would position them for a bye in the Southeastern Conference Tournament next May; a loss, and you’ll likely be facing the challenge of winning out from Tuesday on.
