Week eight of the college baseball season delivered once again in a season full of parity and downright baseball; each week for each team across the country has been a dog fight to say the least. This weekend, as we’ve seen all season long, was a total masterclass of the beauty of college baseball, from statements being made by Georgia and others to Missouri going into Kentucky Proud Park and earning a massive series win over the Wildcats of Kentucky, this weekend had everything and then some to continue this race to the College World Series.
A little delayed with Easter, but as we do every week, a breakdown filled with thoughts and takeaways from the prior weekend of college baseball.

Starting in Starkville, Mississippi, where the 5th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs came into Dudy Noble and swept the 4th-ranked Mississippi State in stunning fashion. In a weekend that felt like nothing could go right for Mississippi State, Georgia took advantage and earned the respect they’ve been deserving all season long. Here’s the thing, credit to Georgia, they did all the small things right this weekend, patience in both pitching and at the plate, trusting the process, and then taking the crowd out of it. Georgia earned the weekend. No other way around it; Georgia came into the weekend, and they dominated, all the while staying true to the identity of Georgia baseball. As for Mississippi State, the Bulldogs will be okay. They have Tennessee this weekend at home, which presents a chance to have a get-right series. At the end of the day, baseball happened, and Mississippi State failed to defend home turf.

Second, staying with the theme of the Magnolia State, Ole Miss went to Gainesville this weekend and took two out of three for a massive series win over the Gators. Ole Miss has been weird team this season, they’re back in the top-25 after this weekend and they a resume that could make a run at hosting another Oxford Regional, but in same sense, it’s the same Ole Miss team that lost a midweek at Memphis, then got swept at home by Mississippi State in a series that was never really that close. Ole Miss has the pieces to compete, but hasn’t been able to fully put them together. This weekend, they have two out of three from Florida and are now in control of their own destiny. Ole Miss will return to Swayze Field this weekend as they host the LSU Tigers for a three-game series starting on Friday night.

Third, in a weird turn of events, Missouri went into Kentucky Proud Park and stunned Kentucky. Kentucky is like Ole Miss, which has been downright confusing to understand this season. The small-ball tactics have worked some, but have struggled outside the Alabama series. Kentucky, when it does the small things right, is among the elite, but the inconsistent offensive struggles have been the Wildcats’ Achilles’ heel through the first month of conference play. Kentucky will now play Louisville midweek before heading to Auburn to take on the Tigers in a massive three-game conference series. For Missouri, going into Kentucky and earning the series was a massive momentum and confidence booster for a Tigers program that has been close but struggled to put everything together, not to mention the win for Missouri was further validation of the depth of the Southeastern Conference. Credit to Missouri this weekend: they smelled the blood in the water and took advantage of Kentucky’s struggles.

Heading just south of Lexington to Knoxville, there was a team coming into its own in LSU, and a hometown team licking the wounds of a hopeless situation that started in October and has since spilled over to the 2026 season. LSU took two of three over Tennessee, including a run ruling after the Tigers dominated Tennessee 16-6 on Easter Sunday to deliver the Tigers with a massive road series setting the scene for a wild upcoming weekend as the Tigers travel to Swayze. When thinking about teams with slow starts that have the greatest potential to reach Omaha, this 2026 LSU baseball team comes to mind. LSU has all the talent in the world, combined with the best coach in college baseball, which sets the Tigers up for a return trip to the College World Series. For Tennessee, the harsh reality that this season could go from Regional hopeful to a rebuild is something that one that supports the orange and white must at least acknowledge as the Volunteers prepare for another grueling weekend as they travel to Starkville to take on the pissed off Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Heading into the Sun Belt, at one and two in conference play, the two best teams in the Sun Belt are on a crash course for a legendary Sun Belt Conference Tournament as they both continue to do what they do. Coastal Carolina has been the better team in conference play with an 11-1 record, but one must not forget the wins Southern Miss has had in non-conference play. It’s a shame these two don’t play during the regular season; it almost feels like a disservice to the sport not to have the two best Sun Belt teams face off in a series. Overall, though, the Sun Belt is deep; you have a logjam of Arkansas State, Texas State, South Alabama, and Troy all within striking distance of the top with about two months to play.

Lastly, we would be doing the sport a disservice if we failed to mention the Alabama Crimson Tide. Something clicked a few weeks ago when Alabama opened the Southeastern Conference slate by being swept on the road to Kentucky. Since then, the Crimson Tide have battled back and have not lost an SEC series since the weekend opener. With the latest road series win over Oklahoma, Alabama has swept Florida, taken two of three from Auburn, and done the same to the Sooners. Now, they’ll welcome the Razorbacks of Arkansas for another fun weekend series for the Crimson Tide. With that series win, Alabama improved to 8-4 in conference play while holding on to the sole third-place position in the SEC standings.
Overall, another exciting weekend of college baseball is behind us. We’re starting to see the tiers form, while some teams, like LSU or Alabama, have either begun putting all the pieces together or are maintaining the momentum from playing good baseball. Either way you slice it, we’re in the midst of one of the greatest college baseball seasons in the history of college baseball. Enjoy the ride; these last two months of the regular season will go by fast, then we’ll be in the dog days of summer with college baseball, and the awkward couple of months before college football.
