As we’ve seen all weekend, the parity across college baseball has reared its head again, with multiple upsets, drama, and really good baseball across the southeastern footprint. We had everything from Tennessee going down into Mississippi and taking a series over Mississippi State, Ole Miss defended Swayze Field against LSU, Florida went into Foley Field and picked up a massive series win over Georgia, and then we saw the resurgence of Arkansas as they went to Alabama and took the series over the red-hot Crimson Tide.

Starting in the Magnolia State with Mississippi State and Tennessee. Mississippi State has hit a lull in the season after being swept last weekend by Georgia and this weekend by Tennessee. Mississippi State has now lost six straight Southeastern Conference games, with back-to-back home sweeps, and is facing adversity that will either make or break the season for the Bulldogs as they hit the road for four games, starting Tuesday night at Samford before heading to Columbia, South Carolina, to take on the Gamecocks. A lot of question marks remain about this Mississippi State. Part of it is just baseball doing what baseball does by humbling you, but the other half is the concerns of the bullpen, and even some of the hitting, which has the potential, as we’ve seen so far this season, to fix itself. Luckily for Mississippi State, the week ahead is four games that the Bulldogs should win, and then they can shift the focus back to being Mississippi State when they welcome a struggling LSU team to Dudy Noble in two weeks. As for Tennessee, credit to the Volunteers for coming into Starkville this weekend, getting back to the basics, and earning a massive series win over a top-ten Mississippi State team. Tennessee came into the weekend with just four conference wins and left with three wins and a sweep. A really good weekend for Coach Elander and the boys, which will help with mometum heading into the final haul before the postseason. Tennessee earned a 7-2 victory on Sunday, earning the Volunteers a massive sweep of the Bulldogs.

Staying in the Sip, Ole Miss took care of business once again this weekend against LSU, sweeping the Tigers while carrying the mometum from the Florida series, where they took two out of three over the Gators last weekend on the road. Given that LSU might not be the LSU everyone is used to seeing when it comes to baseball this season, but Ole Miss dominated the Tigers all weekend long, outscoring the Tigers 18-5 in the first two games of the series before lighting up the scoreboard once more on Sunday, but if it’s one thing we all know about college baseball, LSU is never out of it, the Tigers put togother a massive seven run top of the 7th to tie the game on Sunday at seven setting up for a wild finish at Swayze as the Tigers sought to salvage the series with Ole Miss. Ole Miss would add a run in the bottom of the 7th to take the lead back at 8-7, putting the Tigers on the ropes as the Rebels looked to complete the series sweep of LSU.

Heading down to the Lone Star state, where the Aggies of Texas A&M welcomed former Head Coach Jim Schlossnagle back to Blue Bell Park for an Aggie sized welcome as they dominated Texas taking the first two games of the series 20-12 taking the series and the bragging rights over the coach who left College Station in the middle of the night for a historic Texas program. Sunday’s game did not finish before midnight due to the weather in the College Station area.

On the plains of Auburn, Auburn continues to impress, taking two out of three from Kentucky, including dominating wins on Friday and Sunday, as Kentucky’s woes continue. Coming into the season, there was a lot of hope in this Kentucky team, with many people picking them as a sleeper to reach the College World Series, but Kentucky contuines to struggle finding an identity as a team, and now faces a tough challenge next weekend as welcome the Commdores of Vanderbilt to Kentucky Proud Park for a massive three game slate that could determine the season for either team. A series win, and the talks around Kentucky could shift from being a bust to earning a spot in a Regional and maybe somehow playing into a late top-16 Regional seed to host another Lexington Regional. As for Auburn, Coach Butch Thompson and his guys brought an enormous amount of mometum into the weekend after taking two out of three over Arkansas last weekend and a midweek win over the Gamecocks of Jacksonville State to get the season heading back in the right direction after falling victim to an Alabama sweep two weeks ago.

In the state of Alabama, it was Arkansas taking all three over the red-hot Alabama Crimson Tide, a massive mometum booster for the Razorbacks. For Alabama, like Georgia, the stuff wasn’t there this weekend, and the game of baseball decided this was the weekend for a piece of humble pie. Nothing to be overly concerned about, crap happens in the Southeastern Conference. Like the Florida Gators, the Razorbacks smelled blood in the water this weekend and took full advantage.
In Nashville, it was the Sooners taking two out of three from Vanderbilt by winning back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday to earn a massive series win over the Commodores. Vanderbilt is just one of those teams that seem next to impossible to figure out. They’ll have a something has to give series next weekend as they travel to Lexington to take on Kentucky in a three-game slate. The Sooners now have a date with in-state arch rival Oklahoma State, before welcoming Missouri to Norman for a three-game conference slate. A big win for the Sooners, going on the road and taking two out of three from Vanderbilt.

Down at Foley Field, it was the Florida Gators with a massive get-right series win over the Georgia Bulldogs, taking two out of the three after a disappointing home series last weekend to Ole Miss. Unlike last weekend in Starkville, Georgia, they just didn’t have their stuff this weekend, and Florida took full advantage of the situation and picked up a massive series win over the Bulldogs.
Lastly, in the Southeastern Conference, the South Carolina Gamecocks went on the road to COMO and swept the Missouri Tigers for their first conference series win. Weirdly enough, Missouri took two out of three at Kentucky last weekend but couldn’t carry the mometum at home.

A quick look at the Sun Belt, Coastal Carolina, Louisiana Lafayette, and South Alabama all had big series wins this weekend, while the question marks remain for Southern Miss after losing two out of three on the road this weekend at ULL. Southern Miss is one of those teams good enough to reach the College World Series, but hasn’t been able to put it all together just yet in conference play, dropping to 8-7 in league play. Coastal Carolina seems to be well on their way to another regular-season championship at 13-2 in league play, but like the Southeastern Conference, the amount of parity in the Sun Belt is truly astounding, setting the scene for a final ride to finish the regular season, while playing into a crazy Sun Belt Tournament.

Lastly, in Conference USA this weekend, you had Liberty defending home field and taking down Jacksonville State, closing the gap in the standings with Jacksonville State and Missouri State, who are one and two, while Liberty and Dallas Baptist sit two games back with identical 11-4 conference records. As of right now, the race for the Conference USA regular season seems to be coming down to four teams, with Louisiana Tech waiting in the shadows with nine conference wins and only three games off first place.
At the end of the weekend, if you’re a fan of chaos, then this college baseball season is shaping up to be one that will be talked about for years to come. It’s also the type of season where we have UCLA, and they’re clearly the best team right now, but with the way this season has gone, the postseason will likely be even wilder than we’ve ever seen before.
