It’s no secret, Hugh Freeze can flat out coach the game of football. Coach Freeze has won everywhere he’s been, dating back to his beginning as Head Coach of the Briarcrest Saints, making successful stops at Lambuth and Arkansas State. Hugh has won countless championships and captured numerous top 25 wins. Two of his biggest wins came over Nick Saban and Alabama while at the helm of Ole Miss.
Yet, all of those fame, awards and honors do not define the man, Hugh Freeze. His journey to being a head coach firm on morals and value has not been easy. Coach Freeze, who has made a few mistakes throughout his career, daily reconciles his mistakes. Freeze never made excuses for his actions during his time at Ole Miss; instead, he repented and hit the ground running, now finding himself as the Head Coach of the No. 22 ranked Liberty Flames, a program that is on the rise.
Coach Freeze is also a player’s coach, shown by every player who has ever played Hugh Freeze and his coaching staff vocalizing that they would go to war for him. This connection between coaches and players is rare to find in today’s society. If you study college football history, coaches like Freeze, are ones who leave a lasting impression on the sport. Those are the leaders who push their teams to do the impossible.
What you see is what you get when it comes to Coach Freeze, there is no sugar coating who he is. He’s just a football coach who loves the Lord, loves his family and loves football. In that order, I might add. He’s not perfect by any means, but he’s exactly the coach that college football needs right now. He just gets it.
Freeze is the perfect mix of the old school mentality of running a tight ship and new school experiences of social media. This is evident in how he has the Flames ranked within the top 25 for the first time in school history. His team, for example, went into Blacksburg, Virginia, and dominated a good Virginia Tech team by three points. Even though three points does not seem like much it felt like thirty when the game overall is taken into consideration.
Going forward, the college football world needs to get ready for a coach on a mission. Coach Freeze is on a silent warpath to prove he belongs at the table with the elite. As his career progresses either at Liberty or a bigger school, it’s only a matter of time before Hugh Freeze wins a National Championship. Knowing Freeze’s abilities and determination his championship could be with a program that nobody expects it from. His love for his faith, his family and his team is what he will continue to do until the day he retires.
