Week 11 midweek recap across the southeast

Week eleven of the college baseball season got started on Tuesday night with a large slate of intriguing matchups, including regional rivals’ games between Southern Miss and Tulane, Arkansas and Missouri State, Memphis and Mississippi State, Georgia and Georgia Tech, Kentucky and Louisville, and a highly anticipated game between UAB and Alabama. Combined with the rematch of last year’s Oxford Regional between Murray State and Ole Miss, set the scene for another night across the southeastern footprint for an incredible Tuesday night of college baseball.

Starting things off in Tuscaloosa, where it was the Alabama Crimson Tide welcoming the red-hot UAB Blazers to Sewell Thomas Stadium for a highly anticipated clash between the Blazers and Crimson Tide. With something to prove, UAB jumped out on 13th-ranked Alabama in the first inning, putting up seven runs off timely hitting to take an early 7-0 lead over the Crimson Tide. With a 7-0 deficit, Alabama would have to somehow find a miracle to stop the Blazer train. Alabama had a chance in the bottom of the 3rd with bases loaded, but Eric Hines would strike out looking, leaving the bases loaded and giving UAB more momentum heading to the 4th inning. UAB would add two more off the bat of JP Head with a base hit that scored two runs for the Blazers, extending the lead to 9-0 heading into the bottom of the 4th. Alabama would add two runs to the scoreboard in the bottom of the 7th, but the Blazers’ lead had been extended to 11-2 heading into the bottom half of the 8th inning. In the end, the Blazers were too much for the Crimson Tide to overcome as UAB rolls to a massive 11-2 road victory.

Jumping over to the Magnolia State, starting with 18th-ranked Southern Miss and Tulane as the two storied rivals met once more at Pete Taylor Park on Tuesday night. Southern Miss would jump out ahead first with Joey Urban stepping up with a two-run shot to left centerfield that scored Seth Smith to take an early 2-0 lead over the Green Wave. Tulane would score three runs in the top half of the second with timely hitting to take a 3-2 lead over the Golden Eagles. Drey Barrett would add a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the second to tie the game at three runs each. Southern Miss would take the lead off the bat of Drey Barrett again in the bottom of the 4th with a solo shot to left field to make it 4-3 Southern Miss. Tulane would tie it, but in the end, a Southern Miss walk-off 5-4 victory was written in the stars on Tuesday night as the Golden Eagles escaped with a win.

Meanwhile, in Starkville, it was 15th-ranked Mississippi State welcoming the Memphis Tigers to Dudy Noble for an underrated regional midweek matchup between the Tigers and Bulldogs. Memphis came into the matchup winners of the last five games, while Mississippi State entered the matchup winners of the last four games. Memphis would strike first in the top half of the first inning, while Mississippi State would retake the lead in the bottom of the 4th with a two-run inning to make it 2-1 Bulldogs heading to the 5th inning. Memphis would respond off the bat of Javon Hernandez as he sent one to the left field lounge with a solo shot, tying the game for Memphis at two. Mississippi State would take the lead in the bottom of the 6th off a base hit from Vytas Valincius to take a 3-2 lead over the Tigers. Mississippi State would rally, adding three to the scoreboard and earning a hard-fought 6-2 victory on Tuesday night.

Staying in Mississippi, over in Oxford, it was the 17th-ranked Ole Miss Rebels welcoming the Murray State Racers back to Swayze Field for an anticipated rematch of the 2025 Oxford Regional, where the Racers managed to escape Oxford with a Regional Championship on their way to a magical run to the College World Series. Ole Miss would jump on Murray State early with timely hitting from Dom Decker and Owen Paino that would score two runs to give Ole Miss an early 2-0 lead over the Racers heading into the third inning. That 2-0 lead over Murray State quickly turned into a 10-0 lead after four innings as the Rebels were well on their way to running-rule the Racers. Ole Miss would score nine runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to extend the lead over Murray State to 19-0, bringing the run rule all that much closer for the Rebels. Murray State would add two runs to make it a final of 19-2 in favor of the hometown Ole Miss Rebels.

In Arkansas, a rematch of a wild game earlier in the year in which Missouri State walked off, Arkansas would push the excitement for the rematch on Tuesday night to an all-time high. Since that walk-off of Arkansas, Missouri State has been running the Conference-USA, setting up for a regional-style environment at Baum-Walker Stadium on Tuesday night. Missouri State would take an early 2-0 lead over Arkansas in the top half of the 4th inning with two base hits that scored two runs. Arkansas would add three runs in the 6th to take a 3-2 lead over Missouri State. Missouri State and Arkansas would add a run in the 7th, and Missouri State another run in the 8th, before Arkansas rallied off an eight-run bottom of the 8th to take a 12-4 lead into the top half of the 9th inning. With the mometum on Arkansas’s side, Missouri State had no answer for the Razorbacks in the 9th, as the two split the regular-season series.

In the Bluegrass state, a battle of two teams with enough hate between the two to make the devil himself jealous provided college baseball fans with a thriller on Tuesday night. Exchanging haymakers until Louisville would once again take a lead over Kentucky in the bottom of the 7th at 13-8, but Kentucky would put together some timely two-out hitting in the top half of the 8th inning to cut the Louisville lead to 13-10, giving way for a drama-filled bottom of the 8th and top of the 9th. In the end, it was an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th that gave Louisville the momentum to pick up the win over Kentucky on Tuesday, splitting the season series with the Wildcats.

Overall, another incredible night of college baseball with midweek mayhem doing what it does best by causing chaos across the entire college baseball world.
