Anticipation for the final weekend of conference play around the country delivered a special night of college baseball on Thursday night as teams from every corner of the baseball world gathered in stadiums in what had the potential to be a special night of baseball. Across the southeast, in particular, Thursday night was one of those nights when the hype delivered an intense game that set the stage for an even wilder weekend slate, where the two remaining games of the regular season could quite literally make or break the path to Omaha for some.

Starting the Thursday night off with a pair of teams in the Southeastern Conference and in the American Conference that needed a win this weekend of some sort to secure different berths in the postseason. Kentucky and Memphis alike came into the weekend needing one win to secure different postseason positions. For Memphis, they needed a single win on Thursday night to return the Tigers to the conference tournament for the first time since 2023, a goal Coach Riser set when he took over as Memphis Coach just three years ago. Memphis jumped out on Charlotte early and never looked back as the Tigers punched their ticket to Clearwater next week. For Kentucky, the Wildcats entered the weekend in a similar boat, but instead of the conference tournament, it was the elusive 13th conference win, combined with a strong RPI, that would secure the Wildcats a place in an NCAA Regional. Maybe not as host, but as we’ve seen with Coach oachingMingione’s Kentucky baseball teams, the ability to make it difficult for a host will be there now that the Wildcats picked up the series opener against Arkansas on Thursday night. Kentucky will once again be playing in a Regional and could very well make some noise in Hoover, or even in a Regional as a long shot, to make a return trip to the College World Series.

Down in the heart of Texas, it was the 13th-ranked Mississippi State going on the road into College Station, taking game one of the series over the 10th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies in a high-scoring affair. Texas A&M jumped on Mississippi State early in the bottom half of the first inning, but it was Mississippi State who exploded in the top half of the third with a 13-run inning capped off by a three-run homer from Jacob Parker and a two-run shot from Kevin Milewski. Mississippi State would score five more runs, capped off by more home runs from Ace Reese and Vytas Valincius. With the 18-11 win over Texas A&M on Thursday night, the Bulldogs have all but secured a Starkville Regional and have now made a strong case for a top-eight national seed that would give the Bulldogs a path forward to the College World Series without having to leave the friendly confines of Dudy Noble Field.

Elsewhere in the Southeastern Conference, Georgia once again showed it can win baseball games in more ways than just scoring a lot of runs. Georgia got into a pitcher’s duel with Auburn, and the Bulldogs got the job done 2-1 over Auburn, picking up the 22nd conference win of the season for a program record. The two Georgia runs came in the form of two solo shots from Daniel Jackson and Ryan Wynn. Georgia used two pitchers on Thursday night as starter Joey Volchko went five complete innings, giving up just three hits with one earned run while striking six Auburn batters. Matt Scott would come in for a four-inning save chance, giving up just one hit with six strikeouts, bringing the combined total to 12 as a pitching unit. Truly an insane performance from Georgia as the Bulldogs continue on the journey to being a legitimate National Championship contender.

Another massive game with postseason implications in the Southeastern Conference took place in Tuscaloosa, as the 18th-ranked Crimson Tide welcomed the 15th-ranked Ole Miss for the first of a three-game series. In what will likely be a Regional elimation game, the Rebels and Crimson Tide both needed the series win to be a Regional Host, as the other will likely be a two-seed sent out west somewhere. Alabama took the first game 5-4, and now the Crimson Tide will go for the series on Friday.

In the Sun Belt, the battle for outright championship rights comes down to 20th-ranked Coastal Carolina and 8th-ranked Southern Miss. Without a head-to-head matchup, the outright championship would come down to the results of this weekend, as the Golden Eagles would be at home against Georgia Southern, and Coastal Carolina would have to travel to the state of Louisiana to take on the Ragin’ Cajuns. Southern Miss would take game one of their series with a 14-3 run rule over Georgia Southern, while Coastal Carolina lost 7-2 last night, bringing the two to a tie for first place with two games remaining.
