A quick look at the Omaha eight and matchups on Friday and Saturday

All eight tickets have been punched for the 2026 College World Series, and we now have eight potential national championship teams, with the Southeastern Conference having a guaranteed team to compete for a national championship, while having an outside shot for an all-SEC title, as the red-hot and smoking Ole Miss Rebels have a legitimate shot to continue the momentum in Omaha. Then, from there, Friday brings us a matchup between the two programs that American as a whole has gone all in on, as Troy meets West Virginia on Friday afternoon to jumpstart the College World Series on a high note.

There’s nothing like the College World Series, and as we’ve seen over the last five or so years, there’s nothing like postseason college baseball. It’s a thing of beauty, that unless you’ve experienced it before, it’s hard to describe that feeling that separates college baseball from the rest of college athletics. This year’s College World Series is no different; we have long-awaited return trips, first timers, and even a blue blood mixed in there as well, setting the scene for an insane week and a half in Omaha.

Before deep diving into the four games on Friday and Saturday that get the College World Series started, we must begin with a rather bold conversation. This year’s College World Series feels like a World Series that might be the most well-balanced in recent memory. Outside of Georgia and maybe Texas, there are six programs that could hang around Omaha, creating memories for future generations. On that left side of the bracket, there’s a very real path for any of the four teams to reach the final series, creating a buzz around Opening Day of the College World Series that we haven’t seen in a couple of years. Then on the right side, you have the nightcap on Saturday night between Georgia and Texas, and that will be a terrific baseball game, but starting things off with Alabama and Oklahoma is like waking up on Christmas morning with a room full of toys from Santa.

So, let’s take an early look at the four games on Friday and Saturday.

We get things started on Friday afternoon with a fun matchup with two teams that have done everything right this postseason, delivering hope to college athletics that we haven’t seen in quite some time. From the Country Roads to Troy, Alabama, this matchup is likely to deliver a scrappy instant classic that will likely set the tone for the rest of the College World Series. Coming into the matchup, at first look, you’ll see two scrappy baseball teams that went under most radars for the bigger names, when in reality, you have two teams that have all the pieces to win a few games in Omaha, and maybe even play for a National Championship. Both teams set attendance records last weekend in the Super Regional and now bring a world of momentum to Omaha. On one side, you have the Troy Trojans, who played one of the hardest schedules in the country, making them battle-tested and prepared for this kind of postseason run, truly a remarkable team and a prime example of not letting the record itself be the only metric used when measuring the ceiling for a team. With West Virginia, a program rooted in what former Head Coach Randy Mazey built from the ground up, then handed to Coach Steve Sabins, who took the program and implemented his process, the Mountaineers are heading to the College World Series for the first time in school history. Both the Trojans and Mountaineers represent the purity of college baseball, where resources might not be as high as in other places, but the roads they took led them to the College World Series.

In the second game on Friday, it’s two household names meeting in what could very well be another step on the legacy road for Coach Mike Bianco as his Ole Miss Rebels face off with North Carolina out of the ACC. Starting with North Carolina, the Tar Heels faced elimination in the Chapel Hill Super Regional but got the better of USC, and now they are back in Omaha for the 13th time in program history as they seek their first National Championship. For Ole Miss, the Rebels have gotten hot once more, and the legacy of Coach Mike Bianco has taken another step toward the day when he retires, joining the ranks of Coach Ron Polk, Skip Bertman, and Ray Tanner. This Ole Miss team underperformed this season, even losing to Missouri in the SEC Tournament, yet the Rebels came together as one and have remained unbeaten through the Regionals with wins over Nebraska, Arizona State, and Auburn all on the road, and now the Rebels are back in the College World Series for the first time since winning the National Championship in 2022. Like the first game on Friday, Friday night has true potential to be a really solid baseball game under the bright lights of Charles Schwab Field.

Saturday is dedicated to the Southeastern Conference as four teams will compete in what will feel like another day at the Hoover Met.

Alabama and Oklahoma will meet in the first game of the day, in a rematch of a series played in Norman earlier this year. During that first meeting, Alabama took two out of three over the Sooners. These two teams mirror each other. Alabama has been a bit more consistent this season with solid pitching, and the bats can not only hit the long ball but also take advantage of guys on base. For the Sooners, Oklahoma looks like a completely different team. Much like Ole Miss, the Sooners have not lived up to the hype during the regular season, but have since gotten hot, and now this matchup will be a nice appetizer for the Georgia and Texas to follow on Saturday night. As far as the matchup goes, Alabama will likely win by a few runs, but it could be close to start. Alabama just has too much firepower in that lineup to take an opening loss.

On Saturday night, it comes down to Texas and Georgia. Two teams that were first and second in the SEC standings, but never played each other in the regular season or in the SEC Tournament. Many people in the sport say the winner of Saturday night will be the frontrunner to win the College World Series and bring another National Championship home. From a matchup perspective, Georgia is next level; Texas is elite, but it lacks the depth Georgia has. Georgia can beat you in so many ways, and as we saw this past weekend, even if Georgia is in a hole, the Bulldogs are never out of the fight. Teams like the 2026 Georgia baseball team only come around every few years. Coming into the College World Series, Georgia has all the feels that the 2023 LSU Tigers had when they took over Omaha.

All the action will get underway on Friday and run for nearly two weeks on the ESPN Networks, delivering core memories for the next generation of baseball fans. As always, enjoy the moment. The College World Series is one of the last few things we have left in sports that truly connects us with our past, while carrying on those traditions and spreading the good news of college baseball.
