Joey Volchko and the Georgia Bulldogs slam the door shut on Texas 7-1 to advance to play Oklahoma on Monday night

For the first time this season, the number one in the Southeastern Conference would face the number two, as the SEC Championship-winning Georgia Bulldogs would take on Texas in the last game of the opening round of the 2026 College World Series, with a matchup with the Sooners of Oklahoma looming on Monday night in the winner’s bracket game. Saturday night had all the feels of a heavyweight boxing match with two boxers throwing haymakers early on.

Getting to Omaha for these two elite programs was spent at home, and both swept through Regionals and Super Regionals. Georgia took down Mississippi State in the Athens Super Regional, while Texas swept Oregon in the Austin Super Regional. With both advancing to the College World Series, the fans of both programs would finally have closure on the argument over which SEC team was superior.

On top of the bats that would be on the big stage, a pitcher’s matchup between Dylan Volantis from Texas and Joey Volchko, a pitching matchup fit for this stage. A stage under the bright lights of the College World Series, a true dream come true for not only the two pitchers, but for College Baseball everywhere. Despite giving up a four-run bottom of the first inning, Dylan Volantis settled down, and the pitchers’ duel began, a duel where the slightest of miscalculations could spell disaster for one of the teams. Volantis made it through 6.1 innings, giving up four hits, seven runs, one walk, and an insane nine strikeouts. Thing about Volantis on Saturday night: after the first inning, he settled in until the bottom of the 7th, and honestly might not have had his best stuff, but to settle down the way he did was impressive.

On top of the offensive onslaught, Saturday night was all about Joey Volchko as he went the whole game, giving up four hits, one run, and striking out 15 Texas batters. The first complete game of the 2026 College World Series was one of those performances that will leave a lasting legacy on the folklore of the College World Series for generations to come. That’s one of those performances that will go on the front page of the National Championship book that will be written about this team in the coming months. You’d be hard-pressed to find a smidget of a thing wrong with that performance tonight from Joey Volchko. Simply amazing.

Georgia threw and landed the first knockout punch with a four-run first inning, capped off by a two-run shot from Rylan Lujo off the foul pole in left field to give Georgia all the momentum. Texas would add a run in the top half of the 5th inning to cut the Georgia lead to 4-1. Georgia would add three more runs for insurance in the bottom of the 7th to extend the lead to 7-1 over Texas heading to the top half of the 8th inning. That six-run lead was enough for Georgia as they cruised to the winner’s bracket.

Texas would hang tough with Georgia for a bit, but as we’ve seen all season long, Georgia is just too elite, and if you don’t jump on them early, then a reasonable game will go from close to turning out the lights on the party in a split second.

Georgia will now play Oklahoma in the winners’ bracket game on Monday night. A win for Georgia on Monday night would secure a place in the College World Series Semifinals, with the team needing to win just one game to have the chance to play for a National Championship.

As the late, great Larry Munson once said, “They’ll be some property destroyed tonight.” Truly an incredible performance by Georgia to open the College World Series with a massive win over Texas.
