As Coach Skirka and his Murray State Racers embark on the 2026-2027 slate of Racers baseball, the memory of missing a Regional last season is in the rearview mirror, and the momentum for the future of Racers baseball has never been better as they come into the fall of 2026 with a newly renovated stadium, a clubhouse on the way, and record-shattering donation levels across the athletic department. Coach Skirka and his program are in a position to take things to the next level in 2027. Not only is there excitement for this baseball program, but for the athletic department as a whole, as renovations and winning are going around the entire campus, combined with the most-ever donation amount, as Racers Nation raised 31 million in donations for the athletic department; some of that has gone to baseball, some has gone to basketball, football, and much more across the department, raising the momentum across the entire department. 

Using that momentum, the Racers baseball program is positioned for a future filled with championships, Regionals, and, at the very least, a shot at the College World Series. Coach Skirka has used that momentum to make Murray State baseball a destination for guys who want to compete at the highest level while staying true to the game by playing for a coach who cares not only for his guys, but for Racers athletics as a whole. 

Heading into fall ball, Murray State will look to replace the 16 players they lost to graduation, including college baseball legend Nic Schutte. With 16 players departing, the 11 returning from last season include pitchers Graham Kelham, Jacob Hustedde, Drew Deremer, Carter Boyd, Preston Chaudoin, and Reese Oakley, along with Anthony Perritano, Sloan Barrett, Jake Slade, and Kingsley Guthrie. Those eleven returning guys from last season will likely be the nucleus that Coach Skirka can depend on this fall to bring the portal guys up to speed.

From the portal, Coach Skirka and his staff added 23 guys: 11 from other D1 programs and 12 from non-D1 ranks. Out of those 23 guys, Coach Skirka and his staff added a few household names: James Smith IV from Memphis, Ethan Melton from South Alabama, Wyatt Mosley from West Virginia, and even Seth Farni from Campbell, among others, adding both depth and experience to an already potent Murray State lineup that has both the pitching staff and the bats to build a lead and have a high level of potential this upcoming season. 

As for this fall, Murray State will play four fall ball games all at home; they’ll face Southern Indiana on October 3rd, John A Logan on October 16th, Dyersburg State on the 23rd of October before closing things out against Kentucky Wesleyan on the 24th. A solid mix of regional teams that provide different levels of talent to give the Racers an early test of adversity in the fall. Like many others, the fall season is a chance to develop and play with different lineups before the real season starts, when every game matters. With the current slate of games for this fall, Coach Skirka will have his Racers battle-tested before Opening Day. 

There are only a few other high-major programs in the position that Murray State currently is in; they have the new stadium renovations, they have the pending clubhouse, they have a coach who is a proven winner, and most importantly, Murray State baseball has the full and complete backing of the Murray State community. People are eager for more baseball success, including a return trip to the College World Series; together, that creates a unique position for Racers baseball heading into the fall and well into the 2027 season. Going forward, Murray State will likely be a baseball household name you have to monitor not only in the regular season, but in the postseason as well, as the Racers look to make a return trip to the College World Series. Unlike college football or even basketball, a program like Murray State, with the right investments and even without them, can still reach the pinnacle of the sport and have a chance each and every year to win a National Championship. At the bare minimum, being in the same conversation as Coastal Carolina, Southern Miss, and Troy, of the world with a consistently good product, will then provide at least conference championships and regional appearances to Murray, Kentucky. Who knows? With the renovations to Johnny Reagan Field at Taylor Family Park, there could come a day when Murray State hosts a Regional or even a Super Regional; it’s been done before at similar schools, so why not Murray State? Coach Skirka and his staff have done it before as a four seed out of the Oxford Regional; if you can do it once, you can do it again. 

Murray State opens its fall ball slate on October 3rd as it welcomes Southern Indiana to Murray, Kentucky, for the first of four fall ball games at Johnny Reagan Field at Taylor Family Park.
