Tuesday at the 2026 Southeastern Conference baseball tournament delivered an intriguing day of college baseball as eight of sixteen teams got their postseasons underway with the new technology of ABS, with an upset that stunned a potential Regional host and started the 2026 version of the tournament off with a bang.

We started the morning with a massive upset that lasted nearly 4.5 hours, as the 16th-seeded Missouri Tigers stunned Ole Miss 10-8, advancing to play Mississippi State on Wednesday morning. Quick thoughts on the Missouri win: a massive program-building win that has the potential to jumpstart something special in Columbia for the 2027 season. Missouri is a team whose record doesn’t do the program justice in terms of where it is heading, and getting the first SEC Tournament win since 2017 is a massive building block for the program. For Ole Miss, this has been one of those seasons where the bounces haven’t gone the way of the Rebels; the season’s not over, one of those losses that you can’t allow to turn into an opening loss next week in a Regional. As far as hosting goes for the Rebels, the ship for hosting a Swayze Regional has likely sailed, but the good news is that the possibility of staying in-state with a road trip to Pete Taylor Park is certainly on the table for the Rebels as they await the location of a Regional on Monday.
In the second game of the day, it was a battle of desperate teams, both needing wins this week in Hoover just to reach a Regional. Coming into Tuesday, Kentucky was on the right side of the bubble, while Vanderbilt, with its 13 conference wins, found itself on the wrong side of the bracket due to the RPI and other metrics, and both needed a win on Tuesday in the worst way. Kentucky jumped out on Vanderbilt 4-1 through four complete innings before the bats of Vanderbilt came alive in the bottom half of the 6th and 8th innings to score a combined eight runs between the two innings, while Kentucky fell into a struggle at the plate, and the backside pitching didn’t do what they had to do. Credit to Vanderbilt for taking advantage and earning a massive win to move one step closer to earning a Regional trip. As for Kentucky, the Wildcats will have to sweat things out until the selections are made on Monday, and depending on who you listen to, will sway or lean toward the Wildcats one way or the other.

In the first game of the night, it was all Tennessee over South Carolina, as the Volunteers dominated 11-6, advancing to play Arkansas in the first game of the nightcap on Wednesday. A few takeaways from the game: starting with South Carolina, the dreadful 2026 season came to an end with the loss. The focus now shifts to a complete overhaul of the program, starting with the hiring of the right coach to lead the once-proud program back to relevance on the national scene. South Carolina is one of the best jobs in the country, and this hire has the potential to return Gamecocks baseball to championship contention each and every year. For Tennessee, the Volunteers appear to be peaking at the right time. Although not perfect, Tennessee is looking more and more like the team that went into Dudy Noble Field and swept Mississippi State. Wednesday’s matchup with the Razorbacks will likely deliver another classic between the two.

In what seems like a tradition of its own, the LSU Tigers would play the Sooners of Oklahoma in a late-night game on Tuesday night. A game involving LSU that doesn’t start until 9:00PM seems like the perfect ending for a wild opening day of the 2026 Southeastern Conference Tournament. Once the brackets were finalized on Saturday, the realization that we would once again have LSU playing under the bright lights of the Hoover Met brought a certain level of excitement to the Tuesday round that only a program like LSU can bring. Starting before the Ole Miss and Missouri game at 9:30, the LSU fans were gathered in droves around the RV lots already pregaming and preparing for what could be the final LSU baseball game of the season, as the Tigers would need to win the whole tournament to reach a Regional. For the Sooners, Tuesday’s matchup with LSU was a chance to improve the draw for the Sooners in a Regional and to extend the stay in Hoover. LSU and Oklahoma would trade haymakers through the first four innings, with the Sooners holding on to a 2-1 lead over the Tigers. A three-run top half of the 5th inning would give LSU a 4-2 lead heading into the later parts of the game. Steven Milam would add two runs to the scoreboard for LSU in the top half of the 8th with a two-run shot with two outs to extend LSU’s lead to 6-2 over the Sooners. With the loss to LSU, the Sooners should still be in, but might have to scoreboard watch before Monday’s selections. For LSU, a massive win as the Tigers need to win the SEC Tournament to reach a Regional. One of those things: no matter the record, betting against LSU while in Hoover is risky business, as the Tigers have a kind of magic that is truly hard to explain when playing at the Hoover Met. LSU will now face Auburn on Wednesday night, with a potential matchup with Texas A&M looming on Friday night.
Wednesday will likely once again deliver another insane day of baseball as the action in Hoover heats up with matchups that are destined to deliver instant classics and loads of drama that only the SEC Tournament can deliver. To watch the matchups: Auburn and LSU, Tennessee and Arkansas, Florida and Vanderbilt, and, lastly, the Mississippi State Bulldogs and Missouri. Auburn and LSU have all the vibes to deliver an insane late-night of baseball on Wednesday night.
The second round of the 2026 Southeastern Conference Tournament will get underway bright and early, as Mississippi State faces Missouri on Wednesday morning, with first pitch set for 9:30 a.m.
